Grilled Cheese Three Ways

by Kelsey Chizmar

Hi everyone!

Leanna and I LOVE to cook; it’s become our daily routine to cook dinner together every night.  There are so many ways your little ones can help prepare their meals!  It’s fun quality time for everyone and a great learning experience all at once.  I’ve been looking for ways to try new kid friendly recipes that Leanna will love, and grilled cheese three ways is the perfect way to improve upon the classics!

Leanna and I love creating unique recipes that look and taste amazing.  One recipe that is sure to impress not only your toddler but EVERYONE who sees it is rainbow grilled cheese!

Rainbow Grilled Cheese

2 slices of white bread

2 tablespoons of butter or margarine

6 tablespoons of shredded mozzarella cheese

4 food coloring colors; red, yellow, green, blue (and purple, if you happen to have it!)

To begin, all you need is six small bowls each filled with 1 tablespoon of cheese.

Next, designate each bowl for a separate color; I started with red, using three drops of the red food coloring and mixing it with a fork until each shred of cheese was a vibrant red color.  After that, I then moved on to the orange, and I created that by using two drops of yellow and one drop of red, and then mixing the cheese until it was orange.  For the yellow, green, and blue bowls of cheese, I used three drops of each color for each bowl and mixed until combined. Lastly, for purple, I happened to have purple food coloring, so I used three drops of that in the last bowl of cheese!  If you don’t have purple food coloring on hand, you can use one or two drops of red and blue food coloring to mix up purple yourself.

Once you’re finished, it should look something like this!

I also like to place a kitchen towel underneath your workspace just in case there are any spills!  Once all of your cheese colors are mixed up, you can begin assembling your rainbow grilled cheese!

Create thin lines of cheese across your bread, beginning with the red and ending with purple.

That way when you slice your grilled cheese in half, you will see the entire rainbow!

Then place your other buttered slice of bread on top of the cheese and cook it as you like your grilled cheese!  I cooked mine on a low heat setting and placed the pan’s lid on top of the pan and cooked each side until it was golden brown.

Once your rainbow grilled cheese is finished cooking and you slice it down the middle, this is what you will see!

No filter needed; it’s that easy and it turns out perfect every time! Your toddler will be amazed and ask for rainbow grilled cheese all the time!

Two things Leanna loves; pizza and grilled cheese.  Pizza grilled cheese is the perfect combination of both of her favorites!  And it is SO easy to create!  We used shredded mozzarella and parmesan cheeses for our pizza grilled cheese, but you can use whichever kinds of cheeses you prefer.

Pizza Grilled Cheese

2 slices of white bread

2 tablespoons of butter or margarine

2 tablespoons of shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons of shredded parmesan cheese

3 tablespoons of pizza sauce (or marinara!)

Pepperoni slices to taste

We began by buttering two slices of bread as we would do before we create any kind of grilled cheese.  Then, we flipped the butter side over so that the unbuttered side was facing up and she could create her pizza grilled cheese!

First, Leanna spooned her pizza sauce on to the bread and smoothed it out.

Next, she added her cheeses.

step-2

And snuck a bite or two of cheese in between.

After that, she added as much pepperoni as she wanted.

Which, she decided would be the entire bowl!

Finally, we put the pizza grilled cheese into the skillet to cook as you would your usual grilled cheese! We cooked it on low heat to melt the cheese and turn the bread a crispy golden brown. And this was the result!

There you have it, pizza grilled cheese!

Finally, we have..mac and cheese grilled cheese!

My toddler seems to request macaroni and cheese for lunch or dinner every single week.  We always seem to have leftovers of it in the refrigerator, and this is the perfect way to make use of those extras!

Mac and Cheese Grilled Cheese

2 slices of white bread

2 tablespoons of butter or margarine

2 slices of your choice of cheeses

½ cup of leftover macaroni and cheese

I began by buttering both sides of the bread as I would for grilled cheese,

step-1

And then I placed one piece of bread butter side down in the skillet to assemble the mac and cheese grilled cheese, without turning the heat on just yet.

step-2

I laid a slice of cheese on top of the bread; you can use any kind of cheese you want!  I used American, but cheddar or mozzarella would also work great!

Next, I heated up the macaroni and cheese in the microwave

step-3

And then spooned it on to the bread and cheese within the still cold skillet.

step-4

I added a slice of cheese on top of the macaroni and cheese,

step-5

And then closed up the sandwich with the remaining slice of buttered bread! I cooked it on low heat with a lid over the pan until both sides were sizzly golden brown.

step-6 And that’s when you know it’s finished!

Another way to combine two of my toddler’s favorite foods: macaroni and cheese, and grilled cheese!

Mealtime is the perfect way to spend quality time with your family, but sharing meal preparation and cooking with your little ones can be just as special!

Which grilled cheese do you think your toddler would love the most?
